Roberta questions Minister on Sure Start funding

In a debate in Westminster on the recently released report on Sure Start, published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, I challenged the Minister on the effects budget cuts have had on this service.

Since 2012, five Sure Start centres in the City of Durham constituency, serving the most disadvantaged areas, have closed, with devastating impacts on early-years interventions in those areas. I told the Minister that she needs to visit Durham to understand that Sure Start’s multi-agency approach and access to a wide range of services has not been replaced by other services largely because of cuts to local authorities. I also requested that she carry out a complete review of early years provision and children’s services and ensure it is funded properly, and if she agree to ring-fence money for Sure Start.
