Roberta Blackman-Woods, MP for the City of Durham, recently met with a group of students from New College Durham as part of the Love Our Colleges campaign, calling for fair funding for Further Education providers.
The week ran from 15 to 19 October, and was an opportunity to celebrate the important work that goes on in colleges, as well as calling for better investment in colleges, and fair pay for staff.
“It was wonderful to meet up with students from New College, who had made the trip to Westminster to campaign for fair funding for our colleges. Cuts to college budgets over the last decade means that per pupil funding in Further Education has dropped eight percent in real terms since 2010/11. This has led to fewer hours of teaching and support for young people, and a drastic drop in learning opportunities for adults looking to access further education.
I was pleased to support Love Our Colleges Week, and it is clear that current funding arrangements are unsustainable, and there is an urgent need for budgets to be increased for Further Education providers.”
