Roberta Blackman-Woods Former Member of Parliament for the City of Durham
As we celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage, I am delighted that 2018 will see the return of Women’s Gala.
This Gala ran from 1921 until 1977 and attracted such speakers as Barbara Castle, Jennie Lee and Harold Wilson. It began when women from the Labour movement saw the need to provide political education for newly-enfranchised women, and this one-off event will commemorate everything that has been achieved over the last 100 years.
This year, the Gala will take place in Wharton Park on Saturday 30 June, and will run from 12 noon until 4pm. This will be a fantastic family event, with refreshments, children’s entertainment and speakers, and I really hope that as many people as possible will be able to come along and support this historic celebration. For more information about what is planned on the day, you can see the attached flyer, or visit the website www.womensgala.org
