Roberta has recently welcomed the decision taken by Durham County Council to introduce an Article 4 Direction for Durham City Centre.
These new regulations, due to be introduced in September 2016, will remove permitted development rights that currently allow owners to turn family properties into Houses of Multiple Occupation without planning permission.
The decision to introduce an Article 4 Direction for Durham City comes after a period of consultation with local residents, who overwhelmingly backed the move. Such schemes have already been in operation in other university cities for some time.
“Along with many local residents, I have been a long standing campaigner for the introduction of an Article 4 Direction for Durham City, and I am delighted to hear that this will be introduced in September 2016. It would have been helpful if this scheme had been introduced some time ago, before housing in the city got so out of balance. But this is progress, and therefore it is to be welcomed.
I am also pleased to see that Durham County Council will now begin consultation on a further Article 4 Direction for the Framwellgate Moor area of Durham, and will proactively monitor other areas of the city, such as Belmont, to see if further changes are needed. ”
