Roberta raises concerns about prison staffing numbers

Roberta today has written Secretary of State for Justice to ask for information about prison staffing levels in the three prisons in her City of Durham constituency following a statement made today in the House of Commons Chamber.

Roberta asked the Secretary of State about the number of people employed in Durham Prison, Frankland Prison and Low Newton Prison, and the number of prison staff who have been attacked in each of the years.

Roberta said “I’m very concerned that low staff numbers have led to an increase in attacks on prison officers, so I have written to the Secretary of State to ask for clarification on the numbers.

As I have three prisons in my constituency, I want to know that prison officers can go to work in the full knowledge that they have enough colleagues to support them in the case of any incident. I’m very pleased that this matter was raised in Parliament today, but we now need the Government to take action.”
