MP's questioning reveals ID cards deceit

Picture of Flash

Roberta has discovered that a Liberal Democrat promise to deliver thousands of more police from the abolition of ID cards was and is complete nonsense.

Roberta tabled a number of Parliamentary Questions asking about the saving that would be made by abolishing the voluntary ID cards scheme and the number of police officers that would be delivered in Durham as a result, which is what was promised by Nick Clegg in the City during the General Election campaign.

The response from the Home Office is that there will be ‘...no net savings to the Exchequer in the current financial year from the decision to cancel ID Cards.'

Roberta said,

"Nick Clegg needs to apologise to the people of Durham for promising new police officers which are clearly not going to be delivered.

"Around sixty people who were working on the ID cards scheme in Durham's Passport Office lost their jobs as a result of the Tory/Lib Dem Government's policies and any claim to savings is clearly just fabrication as today's Parliamentary Answer shows.

"Far from new police officers being delivered, the cuts to policing have been so severe that the Constabulary may have to make front-line and other staff redundant.

"The people of Durham have cause to feel extremely betrayed by the Liberal Democrats for so many reasons, this being a prime example.  I have written to the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, to ask him to apologise to the people of Durham and correct his statement and promises during the General Election campaign."
