Lib Dems hypocrisy and opportunism on Council Tax

Roberta has today accused Durham Liberal Democrats of hypocrisy, opportunism and grandstanding on Council Tax at today's Durham County Council meeting.


The meeting discussed Council Tax rate, but the Liberal Democrats saw it as an opportunity to play politics and claim they would support a 0% increase in the rate.

 

Roberta said,


"The Liberal Democrats ran Durham City Council for six years during a time of economic growth when they were receiving generous grants from central government.  Not once did they propose a 0% increase in Council Tax.

  

"As ever with Liberal Democrats, their figures don't add up or make any sense.  They say they want to make efficiency savings in the ‘administration of the Area Action Partnerships.'  The AAPs are the bodies which connect the Council to the communities and serve a very important role bringing local residents into the Council's decision making.  Why are the Liberal Democrats attacking the very body that seeks to bring about improvements in our local communities?

 

"The people of Durham aren't stupid; they know that a 0% increase is a political trick and if implemented would result in services being slashed all over the County, as the Liberal Democrats did when they took over Newcastle City Council. This kind political posturing is unbecoming of a serious political party."
