Roberta has met with Baroness Andrews, the Chair of English Heritage, to discuss our very special heritage in Durham and how we can better protect it. In particular they discussed the changes to the Market Place in the City Centre, and why Roberta believes the plans do not do enough to protect and preserve our historic City.
Roberta said,
"I wanted to meet with Baroness Andrews to explore how we can work with English Heritage to get better policies in place to protect, preserve and enhance Durham's precious heritage.
"There have been plans and developments in Durham which I and many local people feel are not strong enough in protecting the City's heritage. We must make sure we are conscious of the special nature of the World Heritage Site and its surrounding area. This includes, for instance, the riverside and the Market Place. In particular the Elvet Waterside proposed development is one that I have many concerns about and I told the Chair of English Heritage about them.
"I am looking forward to working with English Heritage and other organisations such as CABE (Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment) and Durham County Council to explore new ways of enhancing Durham's heritage in the years to come."
