New business investment in the North East welcomed by MP

Picture of JEREMIE fund launch

Roberta, the Deputy Regional Minister for the North East, today attended the launch of the JEREMIE fund at Ramside Hall in her constituency.  This fund will provide £125m of support for businesses in our communities.  The fund was unveiled today by the Minister for Regional Economic Development and Co-operation, the Rt Hon Rosie Winterton MP.

Roberta said,

"I have argued for and have been impressed by the range of support given by Government and regional agencies to businesses during the economic downturn.  Unlike in previous recessions we have tried to provide help and support where it is needed, especially to new, innovative businesses in their early years, which have been struggling to find funding elsewhere.

"For instance, today the Minister and I spoke to Jonathan Wells from Guroo, an exciting, innovative business providing on-line and off-line learning resources to schools and colleges.  He told us his business would not be here if it wasn't for support he had been able to receive from the public sector.  It is businesses like Mr Wells', and the people he employs, which should benefit from the JEREMIE fund.  By making sure we help advanced manufacturing and hi-tech businesses grow and flourish we can make sure we keep graduates here in the region to benefit from the good jobs these businesses provide.

"The funding for JEREMIE has come largely from the European Investment Bank working alongside region investment bodies which will manage funds.  I am hopeful that many small businesses based in my constituency and around the region should be able to take full advantage of the JEREMIE fund in the near future and I would encourage those businesses who are interested to access the details at www.onenortheast.co.uk/financeforbusinessnortheast"
