An opposition political party has today announced they would make massive cuts to public services which Durham's MP believes would put jobs in this area at risk. These plans would slash jobs from key industries, and very importantly for Durham, would be likely to stop the investment at our Passport Office which the local MP has championed to secure its future.

Roberta Blackman-Woods MP (City of Durham) today held a knitting event at St Nicholas' Church in her constituency in aid of Save The Children's campaign, Knit One, Save One. The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to knit hats for new-born babies around the world. At the moment pneumonia kills around 2 million babies a year; they are particularly susceptible to this disease because small babies are less able to regulate their body temperature which is why they need hats.

Roberta Blackman-Woods MP (City of Durham) has sent her warmest wishes and best of luck to the team of scientists at CERN in Switzerland in advance of their historic Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment tomorrow (Wednesday 10 September 2008). Roberta visited CERN and met with the scientists involved in this work in March this year with the House of Commons Select Committee on Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills of which she is a member. The LHC experiments are designed to give scientists a greater understanding of the beginnings of the universe and tomorrow's event will be the first time the LHC has been used to the full extent of its capabilities.
