About the Ward:

Elvet ward takes in much of the City Centre area including the World Heritage Site so much of my activity in this area has been to protect the historic nature of our City and to preserve green space.In particular, I have joined many local people to campaign against development on the former bowling green at Elvet Waterside which would take away a lovely area of green space which is much cherished by local people.This ward also contains the St Nicholas area of the City including the Sands and the former ice rink site. I campaigned against the planned block of flats which were proposed to replace the current bowling alley and health club because the development would have been totally out of character with the area and spoilt views to and from the World Heritage Site.

Elvet also contains the new Walkergate site which contains much of Durham’s new night time economy and the cultural centre of the Gala Theatre and Clayport library.There is a large amount of student housing in Elvet and I am determined that we need to find and maintain an appropriate balance between student and family, as well as low-cost, housing.
