Roberta’s Blog

In Parliament I will continue to do all I can to expose and scrutinise the hugely negative impact of the Government's policies are having on Durham.

After nearly four years of this Lib-Dem/Tory Government, hard-working families in the North East are on average £1,600 a year worse off and not feeling any economic recovery at all. We need a recovery for the many, not just a few at the top.

In my position as a Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government I have been taking the Coalition to task on key planning issues. In this role I work closely with my Shadow CLG colleagues, councils and key stakeholders as we set out how a Labour Goverment would address the challenges facing our communities.

The Government's changes to the planning system have made it easier for payday lenders and betting shops to open on our high streets and the changes have made it harder for councils and communities to have a meaningful say in the future of their own town centres and high streets.

A Labour Government will give councils and local people new powers to support their high street so they can control the number of betting shops and payday lenders in their area.

Links and transcripts to all of my speeches in Parliament are posted on my blog.
